Local Context

Paving on volcanic mesa terrain

Albuquerque's Westside sits on the mesa west of the Rio Grande, ranging in elevation from about 5,200 feet near Coors to over 5,800 feet up near Volcano Cliffs. Most of the housing stock here is post-1990 — Ventana Ranch built out in the late '90s and 2000s, Volcano Cliffs and Paradise Hills are still expanding. Lot sizes vary from 0.15 acres in master-planned subdivisions to 1+ acre estate lots near the petroglyphs.

The subsoil out here is a mix of caliche and decomposed granite over volcanic rock. It drains well — which is great — but caliche is hard on excavation and can fool you into thinking you don't need much base. We've seen too many cracked Westside driveways that were paved over loose caliche fines without proper compaction. We don't shortcut that step.

  • Subdivision driveway replacement and HOA-friendly scheduling
  • Steeper grade driveways on the Volcano Cliffs uphill lots
  • Wind-exposed sites: extra attention to edge sealing
  • Rio Rancho-adjacent: we cross the line regularly
